Westchester Health In It For The Long Haul

Long-haulers aren’t just truck drivers crisscrossing the country carrying goods. The term has also come to mean those who continue to suffer from a myriad of complications after recovering from COVID-19.

Almost half of these long-haulers endure pulmonary problems: coughing (mostly nonproductive), shortness of breath, chest tightness or pain, wheezing, inability to take deep breaths and respiratory muscle fatigue—to name the most common. In some cases, these issues have appeared one to six months post COVID when there were no initial pulmonary issues during COVID. And those with underlying pulmonary disease like asthma or COPD can have increased difficulty, with symptoms that are harder to control.

Northwell Health Physician Partners/Westchester Health, is more than ready to treat long-haulers — and has been doing just that while taking care of your regular healthcare needs for the past year.

Patients who come to one of Westchester Health's 39 locations suffering from lung issues after COVID will find a medical staff ready to order pertinent tests to rule out other serious concerns such as pulmonary emobili and to evaluate overall lung function. Common treatments have included inhaled steroids, cough suppressants, antibiotics, and oxygen therapy. Additionally, six weeks of pulmonary rehabilitation has shown to improve stamina and endurance as well.

Your doctors at Westchester Health will find the best plan of treatment for you and be there as long as it takes and beyond. Dealing with post-COVID complications is not easy, but know that with Westchester Health, you do not take this journey alone.
